This comprehensive webinar series is designed to empower primary and post-primary teachers and SNAs with practical knowledge and tools to support students’ sensory and regulation needs in school. Across five sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of sensory processing, explore strategies for creating inclusive learning environments, and learn how to support emotional awareness and self-regulation in students. The course is particularly useful for those working with children or young people with sensory processing differences arising from trauma, ADHD, Autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Course Outline:

Session 1 

  • Understanding the senses, arousal and regulation
  • Understanding the impact of sensory processing differences
  • Recognising sensory seeking and sensory avoiding behaviours in school

Session 2

  • Co-regulation precedes self-regulation
  • Linking body sensations, emotions and arousal states
  • Creating sensory-inclusive spaces: environmental considerations
  • Sensory equipment and resources

Session 3

  • Movement Breaks & Sensory Circuits
  • Alerting, Organising & Calming Activities
  • Grounding, mindfulness & breathing exercises

Session 4

  • Tools and techniques to gather information about sensory preferences, sensitivities, and seeking behaviours
  • Creating sensory diets to meet individual needs
  • Setting goals and tracking progress

Session 5

  • Overview of the Zones of Regulation framework and its significance in promoting self-awareness and self-regulation
  • Strategies for introducing and teaching the language of the Zones
  • Effective ways to integrate the Zones into daily classroom routines and instruction

 Bio of Presenter: Lucy Mannion, Director of TINT Education

With extensive experience in therapeutic education as a teacher and senior leader, Lucy has supported many children and young people with sensory support needs arising from trauma, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences. Her postgraduate studies in psychology and psychotherapy have deepened her understanding of the impact of sensory processing differences on behaviour and wellbeing. Collaborating with occupational therapists and other clinicians, Lucy has honed multidisciplinary skills for supporting pupil regulation and access to learning. As Director of TINT Education, she merges psychological theory with educational practice, offering training and consultancy for developing trauma-informed, neuroaffirmative and therapeutic practice in schools.
