Session 1 -What is typical speech, language and communication development in childhood? Learning Outcomes: Develop a comprehensive understanding of typical speech, language and communication milestones Explore the fascinating ways that the brain learns language Understand the different types of speech, language and communication needs in the school aged population Appreciate the lived experience of children and young people with communication needs in school
Session 2 - What is Developmental Language Disorder? Learning Outcomes: Debunk the myths about developmental language disorder (DLD) Explore how DLD fits with other neurodevelopmental diagnoses such as ADHD, Dyslexia & Developmental Co-ordination Disorder Understand the complex relationship between DLD and emotional behavioural developmentUnderstand the impact of DLD on learning and assessment
Session 3- What can I do to meet the needs of children and young people with DLD in school? Learning Outcomes: Understand key terminology related to the assessment and treatment of DLD Explore useful practical tools and techniques to identify DLD in the classroom Discover evidence-based DLD interventions that you can implement in your school setting
Presenter Bio -
Dr Aoife Gallagher (presenter) is an Associate Professor of Speech and Language Therapy in the School of Allied Health at the University of Limerick. She practised as an SLT working with children and young people in school for several years prior to academia. In 2015, Aoife was awarded one of six HRB scholarships nationally to complete her doctoral work which focused on establishing premises for best practice when supporting children with DLD in school. She was a member of the CATALISE consortium led by Oxford University which produced a new classification of speech language and communication needs in childhood. Aoife is an implementation scientist and leads on several national and international projects focused on advancing the human rights of individuals with communication needs across health, education and justice.
