AUT25-70 The Area Model: A Golden Thread of Mathematical Understanding

25TRA559 The Area Model: A Golden Thread of Mathematical Understanding (Two part Webinar)

DATE:     Monday, 3rd and 10th November 2025
TIME:      7:00 pm - 8.00pm
VENUE:  Online Via Zoom

Target Audience: Suitable for Upper Primary, Secondary, Post 16, Mathematics Leaders

The area model is one of the most versatile tools in mathematics. In this session, we will explore how it can support understanding from early multiplication through to algebraic techniques and even long division of polynomials.

These are practical sessions with plenty of hands-on tasks. We will look at how the area model connects different topics, reduces cognitive load, and helps students make sense of what they are doing.

Participants will:

● Understand the area model as a powerful visual and conceptual tool across different stages of learning

● Develop strategies for using the area model to support multiplication, factorisation, and algebraic manipulation

● Learn how the model supports progression from concrete to abstract thinking

● Gain ideas for using the area model to differentiate instruction and build procedural and conceptual fluency

● See how consistent representations can reduce cognitive load and promote mathematical coherence

● Take away practical examples ready to use in the classroom

This series is ideal for teachers who want to extend their teaching toolkit while giving students a clear and consistent way to think mathematically.
