When to step back and when to step in,

Overwhelmed students can internalise their response or externalise their response, both strategies can result of in behaviours of concern. Knowing when to step back and when to step is an essential skill for educators. Teachers will be supported to look beyond the behaviour and identify the young person’s needs. This session is ideal for educators wishing to deepen their knowledge of inclusive pedagogy and get some practical tools to support all learners. Participants will;

  • Understand how stress impacts the brain and behaviour
  • Apply the 3R’s approach to restore calm and enable learning
  • Identify the root causes of behaviours of concern (sensory overload, unmet needs, anxiety, trauma)
  • Recognise the key principles of Lean in approaches, (proximity, co-regulation, validation) and Lean out approaches, (space, demand reduction, sensory breaks)

Facilitator: Dr. Clara O Byrne PhD., M.Sc., M.Ed., M.Phil., B.Sc., B.A., HDE.
